Product Description

Astrophytum is a genus of six species of cactu, native to North America

These species are sometimes referred to as living rocks. The generic name is derived from the Greek words άστρον (astron), meaning "star," and φυτόν (phyton), meaning "plant".

Astrophytum myriostigma KIKKO STONE monstruosus (ex Thailand) is a unique and visually striking variety of the Astrophytum myriostigma, commonly known as the Bishop's Cap Cactus. This variant is particularly notable for its distinctive rib pattern, which sets it apart from the typical smooth-surfaced Astrophytum myriostigma.

Characteristics of Astrophytum myriostigma KIKKO STONE monstruosus:

  1. Appearance: The 'Kikko' variety is characterized by its hexagonal, raised tubercles along the ribs, giving it a tortoise shell-like appearance. This pattern is a result of a mutation and makes the 'Kikko' variant highly sought after by cactus enthusiasts.

  2. Size and Shape: Like the standard Bishop's Cap Cactus, the 'Kikko' variant typically grows in a columnar shape and can reach up to 70-100 cm in height over many years. Younger plants often have a more globular shape.

  3. Spines and Areoles: The 'Kikko' variant typically has fewer spines or may be completely spineless. The areoles (spots from which spines grow) are often woolly.

  4. Flowers: It produces large, yellow flowers at the top of the cactus, similar to other Astrophytum species. These flowers usually appear in the summer and can be quite showy.

  5. Growth and Care: This cactus prefers a well-draining soil mix and should be watered sparingly, especially during the winter months to prevent root rot. It requires plenty of sunlight but should be protected from intense, scorching midday sun.

  6. Propagation: Propagation is typically done through seeds, as the 'Kikko' characteristics are genetically inherited.

The Astrophytum myriostigma KIKKO STONE monstruosus is a unique and attractive plant that adds an exotic touch to any collection of succulents or cacti. Its slow growth and easy-care nature make it suitable for cultivation both by novice and experienced cactus enthusiasts.
